We are seeking an Assistant Director for our Enforcement Branch to lead teams of Fair Work Inspectors to achieve strong compliance and enforcement outcomes for Australian workplaces. This key leadership role is critical to delivering results in the agency’s key priority areas.

Full-time and part-time hours are available. The successful applicant will be required to work part of the week from the office and may also work some of the time from home. Offers will be based on candidate performance and operational requirements.

Eligibility
  • To be eligible for employment with the FWO you must be an Australian citizen.
  • The successful candidate must hold a current Australian Government Security Clearance (AGSVA) or be willing to undergo and obtain a Baseline security clearance.

About the team and role

The Enforcement Branch is part of the FWO’s Compliance and Enforcement Group (C&E) and is primarily responsible for investigating breaches of the Fair Work Act and taking appropriate enforcement action in matters involving serious non-compliance. You will be managing high volumes of requests for assistance, large scale investigations and encouraging an innovative and inclusive investigative culture.

The Assistant Director role suits motivated leaders who can achieve strategic enforcement outcomes in a complex and demanding environment, committed to building their staff’s capability and development and executing the work and purpose of the agency efficiently and effectively.

You will lead a team undertaking investigations with a strong focus on securing enforcement outcomes, demonstrate a high level of productivity and understanding of the requirements of the Fair Work Inspector role.

Typical Duties

The duties of the Assistant Director, Enforcement include, however, are not limited to:
  • Assisting the Director achieve agency key enforcement outcomes in accordance with FWO’s Purpose and FWO’s Compliance and Enforcement policy
  • Manage high volume of complaints from employees alleging breaches of workplace laws
  • Provide high-level project management for large scale investigations
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders and subject matter experts to achieve high level enforcement outcomes in complex investigations
  • Mentor, coach and develop staff in a geographically dispersed environment
  • Work directly with Team Leaders to develop and implement opportunities that drive continuous performance
  • Manage and deliver recruitment and training programs for Inspectors and Team Leaders
  • Drive innovation and best practice service delivery
  • Prepare high quality communication and reports for stakeholders including FWO’s Enforcement Board
  • Assist with the Enforcement Branch’s planning, reporting and implementation of C&E’s Annual Workplan.

Selection Criteria
  • Leadership and management skills, including developing talent, leading through periods of change, managing performance, and ensuring engagement within the team.
  • Acumen in risk analysis and responsiveness in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in driving innovation and enhancing efficiencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a geographically dispersed team.
  • Project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance the strategic awareness of teams.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to succinctly articulate complex information.
  • Resilience and the ability to drive the achievement of key compliance and enforcement outcomes within set timeframes.

Desirable Criteria
  • Tertiary qualifications in law, workplace relations, and/or investigations.
  • Experience conducting or responding to large or complex regulatory investigations.
  • Experience in driving change.
  • Knowledge of the Fair Work Act and Australian workplace relations framework. Candidates without a workplace relations background will need to demonstrate the ability to apply their skills to this context.
